I was contacted a few months ago by a not so “Wicked lady” to re paint her 15 year old Mark Wilkinson Etruscan kitchen.

I use the term “Wicked lady” as the property where this client lives was once the former residence of Hertfordshires very own highway woman Lady Katherine Ferrers.

Lady Katherine hid her highway disguise in a secret room in Markyate Cell; built into the kitchen chimney was a concealed staircase leading up to the room. There was a secret passageway that led from her bedroom to the stables. By day Lady Katherine was the young beautiful lady of the manor but as night fell she wore her highway disguise and become the merciless highway woman who would stop at nothing. Not even murder to get her demands! She was said to hide in the trees and jump down upon her unexpected victims.

The house Markyate Cell stands in grounds of almost 80 acres and 31 miles S.W. of Luton, Bedfordshire. It is a large house which has been almost completely rebuilt several times on account of fires. The date of the last rebuilding being 1840. The entrance to the park is a spectacular gate on Dunstable Road (A5).specialist mark Wilkinson kitchen painter

Beautiful detailing

The kitchen itself is a Mark Wilkinson Etruscan and was firstly fitted by a colleague and friend of mine called Mike Sheehan. Like myself he worked as a sub contractor to Mark Wilkinson Furniture moreover for several years. The fitting was an incredibly arduous affair as the crown moulding (Cornice) was made up from several components. The picture below shows the level of detail and in particular craftsmanship involved with the fitting. Kitchen cabinet painter Markyate

The kitchen itself was painted originally in oil based eggshell and was beginning to show signs of wear. It had also had taken a considerable amount of abuse by the previous owners dog. The larder also had the original sign written design. This was certainly a design feature on many Mark Wilkinson kitchens. The client decided against re writing the larder doors and furthermore opted for a cleaner and fresher look. Kitchen cabinet painter Markyate

This Etruscan kitchen is stunning!

Firstly, work began with the protection of the granite tops and the immediate flooring beneath the cabinets. A degreasing agent was applied to the problem areas. This removed any cooking residues and oil build up to allow for easier sanding. Several of the doors had split on the joins and a couple had twisted. Several adjustments were made which allowed all the doors and drawers to function as they should. Particular attention was applied to the sliding function on the barrel cabinet as it did not glide open with ease. Kitchen cabinet painter Markyate

The barley twists on these kitchens give a beautiful look and a very elegant finish. It was essential that these are caulked and filled properly. Kitchen cabinet painter Markyate

A new fridge was installed. I carefully removed some of the internal tulipwood to allow for the new fridge to slide in and made good the fixing holes of the old surround.

Fantastic furniture

The kitchen now looks as good as the day it was installed. Testament to this fantastic furniture range from a top end Kitchen company. The correct manner in which these kitchens are painted is essential in keeping that sharp new look. So many times I see sub standard paintwork on these kitchens which can let them down.
