In 1542 an Act of Parliament created the Honour of Ampthill, an area of 45 parishes around the town, including 11 in Buckinghamshire, in which the crown owned extensive property and the manorial rights. The Honour was sold to the Dukes of Bedford in parts between 1730 and 1881.

Recent years have witnessed substantial development in Ampthill and the surrounding area. The former site of the old Ampthill Brewery in Bedford Street area was substantially redeveloped in 2006/2007, with the demolition of a Shell petrol station, shopping arcade and small Budgens supermarket, to make way for a new Waitrose supermarket, an improved town car park and a development of shops and apartments known as Oxlet House.

I was contacted by a client in Ampthill who was moving house from Flitwick

The clients were clearly undertaking a major renovations and wanted to look at the options of re painting the existing bespoke Kitchen.

Firstly, a site visit was scheduled to go over options on colours and my procedures as the clients had been consequently let down in the past. The kitchen was a beautiful hand made in frame kitchen with a bespoke backsplash and was finished in a ragged effect. We discussed trending colours and in particular what I thought would suite the newly refurbished kitchen. In addition, the handles were given a good clean before they werere fitted.

Making good!

The finish on the cabinets was an old scumble glaze which also had a varnish over the top for extra protection. This surface had to be cleaned and sanded using my Festool sander and also a Festool dust extractor to eliminate and excess dust.

The doors and drawer front were made from tulipwood and moisture resistant mdf. These are a perfect combination on any hand painted kitchen as they have a very smooth surface and also are a very stable product., a primer is picked on the day I start. I can then also identify which adhesion primer will work best.

I used Tikkurila waterborne furniture  paint with an eggshell finish. This minimises any paint fumes entering the household. The wooden worktop was also refinished using Osmo topoil, unfortunately, over the years, the top had a few black water marks. These did however sand out. Kitchen cabinet painter Ampthill Flitwick

Keeping disruption to a minimum

The bulk of the work was carried out in my workshop. This keeps any disruption to a minimum and the kitchen remains in use during my time on site. On completion, several adjustments were made to the drawers. Over time the weight within had dropped the drawer and was catching the lower part of the frame.

Overall, a very pleasing project with fantastic results. The client had looked at replacement which would have cost upwards of £30k for a like for like kitchen. The overall cost of painting was a fraction of that! They also avoided sending a perfectly good kitchen to Landfill. Kitchen cabinet painter Ampthill Flitwick
